Certified Copy

Certified Copy – Trailer
Set over the course of one day in the Tuscan countryside, Certified Copy is a playful and provocative two-hander following the intriguing relationship between a man and woman who appear to have just met. James Miller (William Shimell) is an English writer, in Tuscany to promote his new book. An unidentified gallery owner (Juliette Binoche, who won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance) attends Miller’s lecture on the subject of art and the value of original works versus copies, following which the pair meet up and decide to embark upon a sightseeing journey through the picturesque Tuscan countryside. There, they are mistaken for a married couple. On the insistence of the woman they keep up the pretence, but as time goes on we realise that there may be more to their seemingly new relationship than meets the eye. The conversations and arguments between the couple and the characters they encounter throughout the day, offer smart and light-hearted reflections on marriage and sexual politics, whilst director Abbas Kiarostami constantly challenges his viewers to work out what is copy and original, play-acting and reality. Dog Pound

Dog Pound – Trailer
Dog Pound doesn’t hide its despair about the juvenile prison where its story takes place. From young French director, Kim Chapiron (who made 2006 film, Sheitan), this drama is a chilling walk through a training ground for violence and aggression, able to stand up on its own bare-boned terms to comparisons with Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet, Dog Pound follows three young offenders with a camera that couldn’t be closer to the skin. Cinematographer Andre Chemetoff sustains that tactility throughout the film, so the cramped spaces are felt as much as seen. The film is released on August 27.

The Collector

The Collector – Trailer
For handyman and ex-con, Arkin (Josh Stewart), a quiet home and a family on vacation is an “opportunity”. For inside the house lies a jeweller’s safe, and inside the safe is a rare gem – his only hope for repaying his ex-wife’s debt and keeping what’s left of his family intact. Unfortunately for Arkin, inside the house is also a box containing the latest specimen in a collection catalogued in blood, bone and tears – a human specimen packaged as “bait”. While the trap may have already sprung shut on parents Michael (Michael Reilly Burke) and Victoria (Andrea Roth) – cutting short their vacation before it could even begin – the jaws have yet to close on teenage daughter Jill (Madeline Zima) and eight-year-old Hannah (Karley Scott-Collins). As the seconds tick down to midnight, Arkin becomes a reluctant hero trapped by a masked “Collector” (Juan Fernandez) in a maze of lethal invention – the Spanish Inquisition as imagined by Rube Goldberg – while trying to rescue the very family he came to rob. From Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, the twisted minds behind Saw IV, V and VI, The Collector emerges as a real-time game of cat-and-mouse, melding primal horror with suspense thriller.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Trailer
To Greg Heffley, middle school is the dumbest idea ever invented. It’s a place rigged with hundreds of social landmines, not the least of which are morons, wedgies, swirlies, bullies, lunchtime banishment to the cafeteria floor – and a festering piece of cheese with nuclear cooties. To survive the never-ending ordeal and attain the recognition and status he feels he so richly deserves, Greg devises an endless series of can’t-miss schemes, all of which, of course, go awry. And he’s getting it all down on paper, via a diary – “it’s NOT a diary, it’s a journal!” Greg insists, preferring the less-sissyfied designation – filled with his opinions, thoughts, tales of family trials and tribulations, and (would-be) schoolyard triumphs. “One day when I’m famous,” writes Greg, “I’ll have better things to do than answer peoples’ stupid questions all day.” So was born the Wimpy Kid’s diary. Diary of a Wimpy Kid opens on August 27.

From visionary graphic artist and director Joann Sfar comes a completely original take on one of France’s greatest mavericks, the illustrious and infamous Serge Gainsbourg. Gainsbourg is an enchanting glimpse at his early life, growing up in 1940s Nazi-occupied Paris, and through his successful song-writing years in the 1960s until his death in 1991. Taking the best from La Vie En Rose and Amelie, Gainsbourg is one of 2010’s highly awaited films brought to us by one of the most beloved graphic artists of our time and the team behind the magical creatures of Pan’s Labyrinth. The film opens on July 30.

Please Give

Please Give – Trailer
Kate (Catherine Keener) has a lot on her mind. There’s the ethics problem of buying furniture on the cheap at estate sales and marking it up at her trendy Manhattan store (and how much markup can she get away with?). There’s the materialism problem of not wanting her teenage daughter (Sarah Steele) to want the expensive things that Kate wants. There’s the marriage problem of sharing a partnership in parenting, business, and life with her husband Alex (Oliver Platt) but sensing doubt nibbling at the foundations. And there’s Kate’s free-floating 21st century malaise — the problem of how to live well and be a good person when poverty, homelessness, and sadness are always right outside the door. Please Give is writer/director Nicole Holofcener’s perceptive – and funny – take on modern life’s contradictions, good intentions and shaky moral bearings. It opens on June 18.
