Balthazar Jones keeps company with the Obamas

Story by Lizzie Guilfoyle

THE OBAMA family were given seven titles by an independent bookshop for their recent trip to Martha’s Vineyard, among them Julia Stuart’s delightful Balthazar Jones and the Tower of London Zoo.

Just out in the States and with a new and simplified title, The Tower, the Zoo and the Tortoise shot into the New York Times top 25 bestseller chart after surprise first week sales of over 2,700.

Apart from Philippa Gregory, Julia Stuart was the only other British writer in the New York Times top 25.

Balthazar Jones and the Tower of London Zoo was published in the UK in Spring 2010.

The Obamas received only one other book by a (living) British writer: Sebastian Junger’s War.
