Richard And Judy select 2009 book list

When Will There Be Good News?

Story by Jack Foley

KATE Atkinson’s aptly named When Will There Be Good News? is among the books that have been selected for Richard and Judy’s discussion group in 2009.

Works by Beatrice Colin, Andrew Davidson and David Ebershoff are also included on the list, along with Steven Galloway and Joseph O’Neill.

The hosts, who now appear on digital channel Watch, have been selecting books for six years and often boost sales of positively rated novels.

Labyrinth, by Kate Mosse, which featured in 2006, went on to become the UK’s fastest-selling paperback of all-time and in 2004, they picked Celia Ahern’s PS I Love You, which was subsequently turned into a hit film starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler.

The books are chosen by a team of four led by Amanda Ross, the managing director of Cactus TV, which produces Richard and Judy’s New Position for Watch.

Ross said the public’s faith in Book Club selections as “overwhelming” and said that everyone now took each year’s list “very seriously”. Pointing towards the credit crunch as an important factor in this year’s selections, she said that the choices had been made with a view to not wasting people’s time or money.

The Richard & Judy selections are:

Kate Atkinson – When Will There Be Good News?
Beatrice Colin – The Luminous Life of Lilly Aphrodite

Steven Galloway – The Cellist of Sarajevo
