CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Season 6.2

Review by Lizzie Guilfoyle

RELATIVELY few American imports have captured the imagination quite like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, the original and arguably the best of the three CSI franchises. Now in its seventh year, it shows no sign of faltering but simply goes from strength to strength.

Now however, it’s Season 6, Part 2 that, for the first time, is available to buy on DVD.

As always, the format is the same which means, of course, the crime (or crimes) take precedence and we still get to know little about the CSIs themselves – one of the reasons for the show’s continuing success. It knows exactly where its strength lies and hasn’t lost its way trying to be something that it’s not.

This was the season, you may remember, that ended with a two-parter (Bang Bang and Way to Go) that saw Jim Brass (Paul Guilfoyle) take a bullet in the chest. And it’s in Part 2 that the relationship between Brass and Grissom (William Petersen) comes into its own as Grissom, with power of attorney, has to decide whether or not surgeons should remove the bullet. The episode also reintroduces Brass’ estranged daughter Ellie but true to form, opts for a realistic rather than a sentimental conclusion.

Another face from the past is that of the dominatrix Lady Heather whose daughter is brutally murdered in an episode entitled Pirates of the Third Reich. There’s even a reference to Dr Mengele, a Nazi doctor who performed gruesome medical experiments on Auschwitz inmates during World War II. But it’s the unspoken bond between Grissom and Lady Heather (Melinda Clarke), two people from very different backgrounds, that may surprise viewers.

As for the ultimate frame, what can I say? Grissom and Sara lovers – could this be stretching credibility a tad too far?

But whatever, one thing is certain, CSI continues to impress and entertain, though if you aren’t a fan by now, the chances are you never will be. If, on the other hand, you are, then you don’t need me to convince you, so I’ll say no more. Just enjoy…...
