Did You Hear About The Morgans?
Review by Jack Foley
HUGH Grant is hopelessly stuck in a rut. While former screen partners (such as Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock) have long since left and flourished in pastures new, Grant seems content to play to the same old formula.
Did You Hear About The Morgans?, his latest rom-com, is a gut-wrenchingly bad experience, devoid of originality, woefully short on chemistry and a tired, generic compilation of the actor’s previous greatest hits.
The Morgans in question are separated Manhattan couple Paul and Meryl (Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker) who find their successful lives put in jeopardy when they witness a murder and become the targets of a contract killer.
In a bid to protect them, the Feds relocate the bickering couple to a remote town in Wyoming, placing them in the custody of an old-school sheriff (Sam Elliott) and his wife (Mary Steenburgen). While there, of course, they’re forced to re-evaluate their feelings towards each other.
From the outset, Marc Lawrence’s film relies on contrived situations and stereotypical characters. It hasn’t got an original bone in its body and shamelessly borrows from the likes of The Proposal and New In Town as well as Grant’s back catalogue.
Few, if any, of the jokes prove funny (even one involving a Grizzly bear) while the people of Wyoming ought to be outraged for the crass way in which they have been depicted.
Grant and Parker, meanwhile, bicker well (too well, in fact, so as to become irritating) but display absolutely no chemistry.
What’s worse is that Grant appears content to merely re-hash his awkward, stiff-upper lipped Brit routine for the umpteenth time – without any of the charm or subtlety of his best stabs at it.
Parker, on the other hand, plays Meryl as a Carrie Bradshaw-style career woman with fish out of water tendencies. It’s hardly a stretch!
Writer-director Lawrence has previously teamed up with Grant on Two Weeks Notice and Music & Lyrics which are, ironically, two of the British actors lowest career points. With Did You Hear About The Morgans? the duo have gone and completed an unwanted triple!
