Emmys 2008: 30 Rock and Mad Men triumph

Mad Men

Story by Jack Foley

TINA Fey comedy 30 Rock and period dramas Mad Men and John Adams were among the main winners at the 2008 US TV Emmy Awards.

TV satire 30 Rock, co-starring Alec Baldwin, took four honours, including best series. Baldwin and Fey also received best acting honours, while Fey also won a prize for comedy writing.

Advertising drama Mad Men, set in New York during the early ’60s, won best drama series and best drama writing.

The night’s biggest winner, however, was mini-series John Adams, which has now won a total of 13 Emmys following the eight it won last week at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. The awards haul is the most ever received by a mini-series.

The drama follows the life and career of the United States’ second president and, at the main Emmy event, saw lead actors Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney win prizes, as well as British actor Tom Wilkinson, who was recognised with a best supporting actor trophy.

Wilkinson was one of only two Brits to come away with awards in what had been a promising evening for the Europeans ahead of the trophy giving. The other British winner was Dame Eileen Atkins who received the best supporting actress in a mini-series award for her role in the BBC drama Cranford.

Her co-star Dame Judi Dench missed out, as did The Office and Extras star Ricky Gervais, who did still manage to provide some light relief to the ceremony by giving the celebrity audience some tips on how to make a good acceptance speech.

“Keep it short, particularly if you’re not on-screen talent – no one wants to hear from a producer… and don’t cry – it’s pathetic, it’s just an award,” he said.

Other prizes were awarded to five-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close, who took best actress in a drama for her portrayal of a ruthless trial lawyer in Damages. The show also won Zeljko Ivanek a best supporting actor award.

Entourage star Jeremy Piven and Jean Smart, of Samantha Who? fame, also took home supporting actor honours in a comedy series.

The 60th Emmy Awards were presented on Sunday, September 21, 2008.
