Preview by Jack Foley

HBO Video released its critically-acclaimed show Entourage: The Complete First Season on DVD to buy on October 30.

The first instalment of this sensational comedy series follows the ups and downs of the Hollywood new comer Vincent Chase as he hits the big time.

Along for the ride are his best friends Eric and Turtle, fresh over from their childhood home on the East Coast, and Johnny Drama, Vince’s half brother.

With executive production by A-list box office star Mark Wahlberg, a man with his own real entourage, this satirical series provides a true and unique insight into the day to day life of modern Hollywood.

The first few episodes of this fantastic new series follow the rollercoaster of Vince’s ascendancy to stardom, from the adulation at the premiere of his first breakthrough film Head On to the ensuing bad reviews.

It also includes the wild night appearing on the Kimmel Show where Vince manages a quick romantic encounter with former fling and fellow guest Sara Foster in her dressing room just before reconciling the long standing rift between half brother Drama and Kimmel live on air.

As the series progresses Vince seems to settle down as a steady romance blossoms with gym and health fanatic Fiona, much to the annoyance of the other guys who feel she is changing Vince too much and cramping all their styles. But will it last?

On the career front, Vince’s rottweiler of an agent Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) is outraged by an industry rival passing Eric a script for Vince to star in a low budget indy film called Queens Boulevard.

After much persuasion from Eric, Vince finally reads and loves the script set in his home town, enraging Ari even more as he has been touting Vince around to all the big studios in order to capitalise on his new found fame.

Eric eventually gets Ari to agree to the Queens Boulevard project and what follows is a hilarious negotiation with the film’s director, the notoriously bad tempered Billy Walsh.

The first series contains cameo appearances in every episode from Tinseltown’s real life stars. The first episode includes a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ appearance from co-producer Mark Wahlberg.

Later episodes include more substantial roles from Luke Wilson, Val Kilmer, Larry David, Gary Busey and Scarlett Johansson, sometime playing themselves and sometimes taking on other roles, often a parody of well known personalities from the film world.

Entourage is a rare treat and a contemporary version of Sex In the City, filling the void left by all the past ‘buddy’ series.

Entourage draws on the experience of industry insiders to illustrate the heady excesses of today’s celebrity lifestyle, as well as the difficulty of finding love and success in the fast track of Hollywood’s showbiz world.
