ER to court Clooney and Margulies for final season return

George Clooney says farewell in ER Season 5

Story by Jack Foley

IT’S the rumour that refuses to die and it’s just been given fresh life support… George Clooney and Julianna Margulies could be returning to the ER for its final season.

According to a report by American magazine Entertainment Weekly the show’s executive producers John Wells and David Zabel have unveiled ambitious proposals to at least court some of the show’s best-loved stars as they prepare to commission the medical drama’s 15th and final season.

Noah Wyle, aka Dr John Carter, and Goran Visnjic, aka Dr Kovac, have already reportedly agreed to make comebacks, with Wyle guaranteed to appear in four episodes next season.

But Wells and Zabel would love to be able to attract some of the show’s biggest past stars in order to round off the award-winning show in style.

They told Entertainment Weekly: “We want to revisit characters that have existed on the show over the years and say where they are now. We’d love to get them all back in some way, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to. But we’re gonna try.”

Clooney has previously denied the persistent reports of an ER reunion but could well be tempted for at least a one episode cameo. But so far, nothing has been agreed in public.

However, nothing is impossible, according to Wells and Zabel, who even refused to rule out the return of one of the characters least likely to be able to make a comeback: Dr Mark Greene (played by Anthony Edwards).

Loyal fans will, of course, be aware that Dr Greene died when Edwards left the show, so how can there be talk of a re-appearance? Well, according to the producers, it could take the form of a “lost episode” from 1996, featuring him and Noah Wyle.

ER – currently in its 14th season on Channel 4 and More4 – continues to maintain the high standards that first got it noticed. Last season attracted the talents of Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker, while already this season viewers have enjoyed the presence of Stanley Tucci.

Zabel revealed that former Sopranos star Aida Turturro will appear in later episodes of the 14th season as a patient, while yet another hot new doc will be introduced to keep things spicy.

Fingers crossed, that Zabel and Wells’ powers of persuasion work…
