I Love Your Work - Preview & competition
Preview by Jack Foley
IF DAVID Lynch were to ever direct an episode of Entourage one suspects it may turn out something like I Love Your Work, Adam Goldberg’s hyper-stylized dissection of the perils of being celebrity as seen from the point of view of a Hollywood star undergoing a total psychological collapse.
Written, produced, edited, scored and directed by Goldberg (director of Scotch and Milk and recent star of Two Days In Paris), it could well be the ultimate arthouse auteur movie.
Boasting an impressive cast and excellent performances, I Love Your Work features an endless series of star turns and pleasantly surprising cameos from the likes of Giovanni Ribisi, Jason Lee, Franka Potente, Christina Ricci, Vince Vaughn, Joshua Jackson, Marisa Coughlan, Judy Greer, Jared Harris, Nicky Katt, Lake Bell, Shalom Harlow, Kathleen Robertson and Elvis Costello.
Hot Hollywood couple Gray Evans (Ribisi) and Mia Lang (Poetente) have only been married a year and already their relationship is heading for the rocks. The endless parade of glamorous premieres and celebrity parties isn’t helping, nor is Gray’s boozing and ever-increasing narcissism.
Convinced he’s constantly being stalked, Gray himself begins stalking a videostore clerk, John (Jackson), and his wife, Jane (Coughlan), whose simple lives away from the flash of the cameras appear to be much happier than his own.
The disintegration of his marriage and his gradual mental breakdown result in Gray experiencing fantasies, real and unreal, in which Mia becomes his ex-girlfriend, Shana (Ricci), who in turn becomes Jane. Obsessing over the “normal” lives of those around him – a life he himself once had – Gray begins to question the true price of fame and success.
A dark psychological drama that draws on and pays homage to the works of David Lynch, Martin Scorsese, John Cassavetes, the French New Wave directors and Alfred Hitchcock (Rear Window and Vertigo in particular), I Love Your Work entertainingly explores the pressures of fame and the difference between getting what you want and wanting what you get.
I Love Your Work will be released on DVD (£15.99) by Scanbox Entertainment on June 30, 2008.
