Katie Melua - Concert Under The Sea (Preview)

Katie Melua

Preview by Jack Foley

ON October 2, 2006 Katie Melua performed a concert at the bottom of the North Sea and this 66 minute documentary tells the story of that performance – from the conception of the dream by the gas platform manager, the planning, Katie and her band’s rigorous safety training to the behind-the-scenes logistics of moving 22 tonnes of equipment from land to the bottom of the rig.

The DVD concludes with some footage of the actual concert. A stunning (and at times claustrophobic!) viewing experience, this exciting non-fiction film shot in and off the coast of Norway sees world superstar Katie Melua rising to a challenge.

Invited by Statoil, the gas drilling company, to celebrate their 10th anniversary on the biggest man-made structure ever moved on Earth, Katie (after checking their environmental record) agreed to perform on the North Sea floor at the foot of a leg of the enormous drilling platform, thereby incidentally setting the Guinness World record for the deepest underwater concert ever performed – 303 metres below the sea.

The event was certainly a logistical challenge – 16 helicopters and three supply ships transported 22 tonnes of equipment plus crew the event and TV production crew numbered 33 with Katie and her band and crew totalling 10.

In addition to the documentary film the DVD includes the following extras:

Katie: The Interview
Additional to the film of Katie Melua’s undersea concert is a new interview describing the adventure.

It’s Only Pain – the promo video (plus photo montage)
The previously unavailable promotional video of It’s Only Pain, shot at the derelict theatre at Alexandra Palace, together with a beautiful montage of shots taken by renowned photographer Jo de Banzie during the ‘making of’ the film.

Shy Boy – the promo video
This live video was filmed on Katie’s 2007 tour.

Singing In The Rain
Interview with Katie plus footage of Katie and her band in Tampa, Florida as they try to make the best of a very wet situation when a topical storm hits their soundcheck – complete with torrential rain, wind and lightning.

This is the first ‘non-concert’ DVD of Katie ever to be released.
