The film tells the intriguing tale of two parallel lives and takes characters from James Joyce’s Ulysses and places them in the southern American states. This absorbing and compelling story of human tragedy and how it reverberates through future generations is packed with breathtaking performances from an all-star cast.
Having served 15 years for murder, the reserved and distant Stephen (Fiennes) is released and begins working at a local diner, revealing little about his past to owner Vic (Shepperd) or local redneck (Hopper).
Meanwhile, the painfully shy Leo is growing up in a loveless and dysfunctional environment with his depressed and fiery mother, Elizabeth (Shue), who has never recovered from the tragic loss of her husband and daughter in a horrific road accident days before Leo’s birth.
The link between these two remarkable characters is revealed thorough the intelligent and successfully crafted dual narrative and the powerful cinematography which has earned comparisons with American Beauty from Film 4.
