Manufacturing Dissent: Uncovering Michael Moore - Preview
Preview by Jack Foley
Manufacturing Dissent: Uncovering Michael Moore is a documentary that seeks to separate fact, fiction and legend. It tracks Michael Moore on tour during the release of the explosive Fahrenheit 9/11, all the while chronicling the politically supercharged climate in America that has fuelled Moore’s transition from filmmaker to icon of the political left.
The documentary is made by director/producers Debbie Melnyk and Rick Caine who specialise in documentary filmmaking.
They explain: “We didn’t want this to be a hit on Michael, but a balanced look at who this cultural icon of the American left truly is and how he has affected American politics. We also wanted to examine how the culture of celebrity affects the public’s view of hot button issues.
“What we never anticipated was Michael Moore’s reluctance to be involved with like-minded filmmakers in a profile of him. We also had no idea there are so many skeletons in his closet.
“We are big believers in freedom of speech, questioning authority and speaking truth to power and that’s what this film is about. But as we followed Michael Moore around for over two years we soon realized freedom of speech, questioning authority and speaking truth to power is in the eye of the beholder.”
Spencer Pollard, Liberation’s Managing Director, added: “This is a really interesting piece for us, we are profiling it theatrically because we believe there is an audience who will appreciate the balanced view that this documentary offers. The filmmakers are respected journalists; it’s a very entertaining 74 minutes”
Manufacturing Dissent is released on DVD on October 22.
