Meet The Spartans
Review by Jack Foley
IT WOULD be nice to suggest that there’s something fiendishly clever about Meet The Spartans, a lowbrow spoof of 300 and countless other movies, but for the life of me I cannot!
Rather, this latest offering from the duo behind the Scary Movie series, Epic Movie and Date Movie (that’s Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer) is a crass, shoddy and unrelentingly poor attempt to send-up popular culture.
The main target is, of course, 300 and what follows is a virtual re-tread of the events in that movie as Sean (ex-EastEnders) Maguire’s King Leonidas leads less than 30 Spartans against the onslaught of the Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae (complete with leather pants and painted on six-packs).
But as well as sending up the inherent campness of Snyder’s movie, there’s also pot-shots at everything from Transformers and Rocky Balboa to American Idol, Stomp The Yard and Britney Spears.
Some of this could have been vaguely amusing if Seltzer and Friedberg hadn’t been so obsessed with toilet humour. But as most jokes involve body parts or some form of juvenile humour, it’s a very long haul indeed even at 84 minutes (10 of which are taken up by credits and outtakes).
Carmen Electra crops up to flaunt her body at every opportunity and there’s one semi-decent chuckle at the expense of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie but in all other respects this is a turgid experience that struggles to muster even a one-star rating.
That it made the top spot at the US box office earlier this year is particularly worrying given that it paves the way for more of this kind of thing. Please, please don’t encourage them by going to see it here.
