The Secret of Santa Vittoria

Preview by Jack Foley

GOLDEN Globe winning comedy The Secret of Santa Vittoria, directed by Stanley Kramer, gained much critical acclaim, including two Oscar nominations on its original release in 1969. Now it comes to DVD courtesy of Odyssey Video, on September 26, 2016.

Anthony Quinn (Lawrence of Arabia) leads a stunning international cast with a typically larger than life performance, alongside iconic Italian Anna Magnani (The Rose Tattoo), as his long suffering wife Rosa. The film also stars award-winning Virna Lisa (La Reine Margot), Giancarlo Giannini (Quantum of Solace) and international singing sensation Sergio Franchi.

Set in Italy, 1943, when the German army occupies most of Italy, The Secret of Santa Vittoria tells the story of small town Santa Vittoria where life revolves around the production (and consumption) of wine.

Knowing the Germans intend to seize their wine, the mayor Italo Bombolini (Quinn), has devised a plan.

Eventually German forces arrive in the town, and so begins a battle of wills between Bombolini and army commander Captain von Prum (Hardy Krüger – The Flight of the Phoenix).
