This Happy Breed - Blu-ray preview

This Happy Breed

Preview by Jack Foley

NETWORK is pleased to announce the release of This Happy Breed (U) in the High Definition format for the first time in the UK. It will be available to own on June 18, 2012, RRP £19.99.

This Happy Breed was David Lean’s first official credit as a director, and the most successful film of 1944. The film adaptation from Noel Coward’s hit stage play would be one of several successful collaborations between Lean and Coward.

The film tells the story of the Gibbons family. It is through them and their associates, that Coward shows the spirit of a nation in a time of adversity. Robert Newton (Odd Man Out) and Celia Johnson (Brief Encounter) preside over their family and all its ups and downs with great dignity, patience and compassion.

The story follows their trials and tribulations from the end of the Great War onwards. It proves to be Coward’s anthem to British resilience. It celebrates the stoicism, humour and strength of ordinary British people.

Though the First World War has come to an end and the head of the household, Frank, has returned safely, the Gibbons have yet more to deal with. Apart from day to day living in the austere, post-war Britain, the couple also has to contend with their growing children in these changing times.

Queenie, one of their daughters, goes to work in a beauty parlour and gets ideas above her station. Meanwhile, their other daughter Phyllis runs off with a married man instead of marrying Billy from next door…

The ever dependable Robert Newton and Celia Johnson turn in outstanding performances, strongly supported by John Mills (The Way to the Stars) and Stanley Holloway (My Fair Lady).

This release is more than a wonderful slice of nostalgia; it is also a piece of sumptuous filmmaking by the young David Lean, with a heart-warming, cheering story for rainy days.

Special features include a brand new-digital restoration, the original theatrical trailer, the re-release trailer, a restoration comparison featurette, an extensive South Bank Show feature on David Lean, a commemorative booklet by noted British film historian David Rolinson, extensive stills gallery, including behind-the-scenes images and the original press book and material in PDF format.
