Zack And Miri Make A Porno

Zack And Miri Make A Porno

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 2 out of 5

PORN meets romantic comedy in Kevin Smith’s latest – although the writer-director seems to be suffering from performance anxiety!

Unlike his earlier movies, Clerks, Mallrats or Chasing Amy, Zack and Miri Make A Porno overdoes the crass at the expense of the sophisticated. Hence, what should have been funny, rude but romantic is just plain puerile and unable to carry that much emotional penetration.

Lifelong buddies Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) decide to make their own porn film in desperation when they’re faced with crippling debt and a home devoid of plumbing and electricity. But when the sex scenes arouse some genuine feelings between the two of them, both Zack and Miri are forced to face up to some awkward emotions.

To be fair, Smith’s film benefits from another amiable performance from gruff leading man Rogen and yet another take-notice turn from the rapidly emerging Banks (most recently seen playing Laura, ahem, Bush in Oliver Stone’s W.!).

There are also some laugh-out loud gags and one-liners, a priceless extended cameo from Justin Long and Brandon (Superman Returns) Routh and some unexpectedly believable sparks between the central players.

But an over-reliance on lowbrow toilet humour, endless foul language and boob humour eventually drags it down and feels repetitive and tiresome. The presence of real-life porn stars Traci Lords and Katie Morgan, meanwhile, simply feels like wish-fulfilment on the writer-director’s part.

Come the inevitably slushy ending – delivered while Miri is sat on the loo (!) – audiences may feel that it’s time for Smith to start growing up.
