Committed to Print - londonprintstudio gallery
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
AN EXHIBITION celebrating digital art, Committed to Print, will be on display at the londonprintstudio gallery from November 21, 2008 to January 31, 2009.
The exhibition features a selection of work from leading UK artists – produced as prints – in collaboration with the Centre for Fine Print Research, Bristol (CFPR). An extraordinary set of images and even 3-D prints emerge – as Britain’s digital artists stretch our understanding of print in a series of bold digital experiments.
Artists taking part include Richard Hamilton, Paul Hodgson, Susan Collins, Charlotte Hodes, Peter Walters and Paul Sandameer.
The exhibition shows that digital print making – like other fine art printing techniques – is a rich medium and an art form in its own right. It gives a glimpse of the future, the apparently limitless possibilities presented by digital print as a medium.
For the past decade, a team of researchers, including Stephen Hoskins and Paul Thirkell from CPFR, has been working with innovative printing technologies collaborating with a number of leading UK artists – such as Richard Hamilton, Paul Hodgson, Susan Collins and Charlotte Hodes – to explore the exciting new horizons in fine art print.
Specially commissioned for the exhibition, many of the works use high quality pigmented inks and handmade papers to commit the artist’s unique digital image to print – from engineering technologies to more conventional images.
The work expands our notion of print making. For example, world renowned British artist Richard Hamilton experiments with print typography in The typo Topography of Marcel Duchamp’s Large Glass, while Paul Sandameer uses print to create extraordinary 3D printed objects.
Times: Tuesday to Saturday from 10.30am to 6pm.
