Fiona Athanassaki at the Empire Gallery
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
AN EXHIBITION of new work by Fiona Athanassaki will be on display in the Vestry Room at the Empire Gallery from August 6 to August 10, 2008.
Athanassaki works with a mixture of paint mediums, using traditional techniques such as gilding combined with a variety of other materials to explore their interaction, contrasts and textures. The results are images radiant with colour and vibrancy.
Her painting is influenced by landscape primarily from the Mediterranean. Using simple abstract forms and colour, surfaces are worked on with glazes to build up a layered transparency and to create a sensation of depth. These paintings are described as explosive experiments into the world of colour.
Athanassaki is a London based painter whose 2006 solo show at the Spitz Gallery was a success.
