Pandora's Box

Event preview

THIS September, Rich Mix has a programme of events lined up to celebrate the London Fashion Week.

IN CONVERSATION with Barbara Hulanicki – Tuesday, September 22, 2009. Screen 2 at 7.30pm. Tickets: £5.

Born in Poland but raised in England, Barbara Hulanicki is essentially known for having founded the boutique BIBA in 1964, beginning as a small mail-order business featured in the fashion columns of newspapers such as the Daily Mirror.

The event, in which Hulanicki speaks about her life, career, and inspirations, will be hosted by Pamela Church Gibson, Reader in Cultural and Historical Studies at London College of Fashion, who is researching on work around the complex relationship between film, fashion, fandom and the contemporary star system. FASHION ON FILM – Friday, September 18 to Sunday, October 4, 2009 – a series of films which have influenced and celebrate UK creativity – from the perennial style icon Louise Brooks, to the ‘old-money chic’ of Grey Gardens. They include:

Pandora’s Box (PG) – Friday, September 18 at 7.30pm. Tickets: £8, £6 concessions.

The ironic, in vogue Louise Brooks gives a genuinely mesmerising performance as the prostitute Lulu, a femme fatale who unleashes uncontrollable desires in the men and women she encounters. This silent classic will be screened with live piano accompaniment from Stephen Horne.

Grey Gardens (PG) – Sunday, September 20 at 4pm. Tickets: £8, £6 concessions.

Grey Gardens visits Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy’s aunt, Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale, and her 56-year-old daughter Edie, who live together in a dilapidated, 28-room mansion known as Grey Gardens, dreaming of European dynasties and mid-century highlife.

A Bigger Splash (18) – Sunday, September 27 at 4pm. Tickets: £8, £6 concessions.

Following David Hockney’s break-up with fellow painter Peter Schlesinger and hanging out with Britain’s art and fashion elite including Celia Birtwell and Ossie Clark, A Bigger Splash captures the essence of being an artist, and offers a glimpse into the worlds of art and fashion during the heady days of the 1960s.

Brit Chic – Sunday, October 4 at 4pm. Tickets: £8, £6 concessions.

Celebrate the nation’s knack for cutting-edge couture with this special selection of rarely-seen films from the BFI National Archive, offering a kaleidoscopic survey of post-war British fashion.

CUT and CREATE! FASHION WORKSHOP (in collaboration with Tower Hamlets Lifelong Learning) – Saturday, September 19. Venue 2 from 11am to 4pm. Tickets: £10.

Try out your fashion creativity and stretch your skills at this one-day fashion workshop. Explore the first stages of cutting and draping patterns on a mannequin, the way the professionals do. Using pattern paper and fabric, our themes will focus on styles from across the globe.
