Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle

THIS year’s summer exhibition at Goldsmith’s Hall features jewellery and silverware designed and made by some of the most talented artists in the field. Entitled Rising Stars – A blazing trail of new talent, it runs from Friday, June 1 to Saturday, July 14, 2007.

Janice Blackburn, contemporary applied arts curator and journalist, who was invited by the Goldsmiths’ Company to guest curate the exhibition, has chosen 18 designers whom she considers to be “up and coming” in terms of their skills, talent and public recognition. Between them they demonstrate a wide range of personalities, styles and working techniques.

They are Disa Allsopp (jeweller), Zoe Arnold (jeweller), Shimara Carlow (silversmith/jeweller), Chien-Wei Chang (silversmith), Lin Cheung (jeweller/silversmith), Maike Dahl (silversmith), Tomasz Donocik (jeweller), Sidsel Dorph-Jensen (silversmith), David Goodwin (jeweller), Jo Hayes-Ward (jeweller), Mizuho Koizumi (silversmith), Nina Koutibasvili (jeweller), Kelly McCallum (jeweller), Wayne Meeten (silversmith), Lynne Kirstin Murray (jeweller), Kayo Saito (jeweller), Chrystanthe Staikopoulou (silversmith/jewellery for furniture) and Ruth Tomlinson (jeweller).

Of the exhibition Blackburn said: “Rising Stars represents the diversity and innovation of jewellers and silversmiths working in the UK today. No longer can we expect the ‘expected’ but the work in this exhibition demonstrates the makers’ integrity of skills with enormous flair, imagination and surprise”.
