Ruth Proctor: I’ll be your mirror
SIOBHAN Davies Studios is hosting a participatory exhibition by emerging multi-disciplinary British artist Ruth Proctor. Entitled Ruth Proctor: I’ll be your mirror, it will be on display from May 13 to June 25, 2011.
Proctor is interested in performance or the potential for performance and here she presents new work stimulated by the functions of Siobhan Davies Studios, exploring moments of choreography, performance and rehearsal.
Using visual rhythms encompassing objects, imagery and text, her work plays with movement, repetition and error, building an active connection between the building and the viewer. As she explains:
‘The space of the building will have an important role, almost as if the space is a stage for the artworks and the viewer is a participant/performer in the work.’
Highlights of the show include a participatory piece inviting the viewer to wear an item of costume and follow markings on the floor that correspond to a set of instructions for movements which will lead the viewer around the spaces within the studios. The piece will playfully suggest actions, choreographing the viewer, who in turn will become the artwork or the subject of the work.
Also on show will be Proctor’s Photo-booth Dance – sets of self portraits the artist makes whenever she comes across an old style photo-booth on her travels. She plays with the constraints of the photo-booth, which always takes a set of four photos that cannot be altered. For each set of photos, Proctor devises four poses and repeats the act three times. So each resulting set of photos is ostensibly the same, but in fact different.
Dotted around the building will be drawings that echo dance or music notation – plans for a performance yet to happen, or documentation of movements that have already been made.
All these works will have ideas of repetition within them, and of the ‘errors’ that this can create in the process of repetition.
Artist in Conversation – at Siobhan Davies Studios on Friday, June 3 at 7pm.
Ruth Proctor will discuss her work and working practices with Kathy Noble, Curator (Interdisciplinary Projects), Tate Modern. Reservations for a free place on 020 7091 9650.
