Sole: Earth, Sea and Sky - GX Gallery
SOLE: Earth, Sea and Sky, Michael Sole’s third solo London exhibition, will be on display at Camberwell’s GX Gallery from March 2 to March 28, 2013.
Sole is a British landscape painter, with a passion for paint. He creates halting images of immense skies, turbulent oceans, and dapple filled avenues that literally stop people in their tracks.
Sole’s youth belies his ability. Born in 1985, he was educated at Bournemouth Institute for Art & Design and completed his BA at Wimbledon College of Art. Since then, he has twice been awarded marine artist of the year by the Royal Society of Marine artists.
Sole is best known for revolutionary emotive portrayals of the customary English landscape. Inspired by artists such as Van Gogh, he is similarly emphatically dedicated to expression, evident in the paintings, which engage you in the sense of what it might feel like to be truly present in a moment.
At times joyful, vibrant and contemplative, always strong, Sole has a wonderfully balanced use of brushstroke and more physical applications of medium, pouring and splashing the paint across the canvas.
Resolution is important to Sole, with intent to use involuntaryism (allowing experience to influence non cognitive action) he creates a kinetic flow cleverly contained within, never over spilling the physical or esoteric boundaries of a painting.
Often the focus is not the subject but on a fluid presentation of tones, shades and colours, transporting the viewer to places of sensation and memory. Soles works are resonant of those of the modern colourists, David Hockney and Wolf Kahn.
Sole is an artist to watch, his works being a great opportunity for investment in British marine and landscape contemporary painting. In this exhibition, new works made by the artist specifically for the gallery will be on show.
Times: Monday to Saturday 9am to 6pm.
