The Nunnery - two forthcoming exhibitions
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
THE NUNNERY, a contemporary gallery space and part of the Bow Arts Trust, has two new exhibitions for May and June, 2007 – Visions in the Nunnery and Schools in View.
Visions in the Nunnery, the tenth annual open submission event for artists working with the moving image in a contemporary context, is on May 19 and 20.
This year’s exhibition includes recent work by established and emerging artists worldwide, selected by organisers Tessa Garland, Darshana Vora and Cinzia Cremona from more then 300 submissions. The variety of conceptual approaches and aesthetic choices shows a medium alive with enthusiasm and questions.
A Critical Forum on Sunday, May 20 at 3pm will be an opportunity to discuss the work with the artists and reflect on the different uses and frameworks for the moving image.
Private view: Friday, May 18, 2007, from 6.30pm to 9pm.
Opening Times: 12noon to 6pm.
Schools in View, an exhibition celebrating art in schools and designed by Annie Bicknell, runs from June 7 to June 16, 2007.
This annual exhibition provides a rare opportunity to share some of the exceptional artwork being produced by local young people working with 19 professional artists and performers. It is dedicated to the work of 15 local schools and is supported through the long standing partnership between Bow Arts Trust and St Paul’s Way Community School in Poplar.
Whether creating 40 foot colourful banners, going back in time using blue-screen film imaging, capturing the character of traders along the Roman Road through digital photography or producing imposing works of public art, what is common to all this work is a core belief in the creativity of young people and the value of their ideas.
This year, the exhibition has expanded to include a competition for the family of schools looked after through the Bow Arts Trust partnership with St Paul’s Way Community School. Accordingly, each of the Tower Hamlets primary and secondary schools included in the family of schools will be submitting postcard sized designs on the theme of family. The young people will be collecting their art prizes at 2.15 pm as the show opens.
Private view: Tuesday, June 5, 2007, 2:30pm to 5pm.
Opening times: Thursday to Saturday, 1pm to 5pm.
Venue: The Nunnery, 181 Bow Road, London, E3 2SJ.
