Variant Space - Grosvenor Gallery

Work by Justin Fitzpatrick

Exhibition preview

A GROUP exhibition entitled Variant Space will be on display at the Grosvenor Gallery from August 4 to August 20, 2010.

The artists taking part are Rebecca Glover, Justin Fitzpatrick, Miriam Maselkowski, Katherine Prendergast and George Winks.

Variant space suggests an alternate view of space, which is touched on by each of these artists in different aspects of their practice. This can be a reimagining of space as a tangible form, the creation of a physical presence that exceeds the two-dimensional picture plane, or the invention of an alternate dream-like reality.

Rebecca Glover addresses space directly, creating dynamic paintings and installations in which she is affected by space, or she affects it, opening it up, making it tangible.

Justin Fitzpatrick paints ‘entities’ made of assorted objects drawn from music, art history, and dreams.

Miriam Maselkowski also works with dreams. They provide her with a setting and narrative which she can manipulate and mould freely, painting landscapes of iconic and simplified forms.

Katharine Prendergast takes inspiration from architecture, and plays with the contradiction between surface and form in her paintings.

For this show, George Winks is installing a ‘calibrated mirror field’ made up of hundreds of small mirrors, which, when viewed from a specific point, collects different colours from the surrounding space to create a unified image.

Admission: Free.

Times: Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 5.30pm; Saturday from 11:30am to 4pm.
