Wax Artworks by Yuko Hirose
Preview by Lizzie Guilfoyle
AN EXHIBITION of Wax Artworks by Yuko Hirose will be on display at The Coningsby Gallery from Monday, July 21 to Saturday, July 26, 2008.
Hirose’s love affair with wax was kindled in 1997 when she encountered a small candle with a tiny flame in a garden in Ireland. She felt a certain power emanating from the candle – that it was indicating a pathway to her future.
Hirose duly began to make candles and also started to study wax and its many properties. In the process, she has visited a number of countries to explore each country’s native wax culture.
To create her artworks, she has also formulated her own original type of wax which she regards as a living form. Her works are well known in Japan although this is the first time they have been displayed in London.
