STEVE McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave has topped the UK box office, displacing American Hustle.

The slavery drama, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender, earned £2.5 million in its first weekend following glowing reviews. It also won a Golden Globe at the weekend.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug fell to number three in its fifth week of release, while Disney’s box offic juggernaut Frozen and Michael Douglas ensemble Last Vegas rounded out the top five.

Of last weekend’s other new releases, Colin Firth drama The Railway Man debuted at number six with £1.2 million while Vince Vaughn comedy Delivery Man landed seventh with £1.1 million.
