24 movie set to bring Jack Bauer to Europe

24, Day 7

Story by Jack Foley

JACK Bauer is finally heading to cinema screens now that a 24 movie has moved into development.

Twentieth Century Fox’s film and TV studios have teamed up to bring the hit TV series to the big screen, ending years of speculation as to whether Kiefer Sutherland’s CTU agent would finally get a cinema outing.

Acclaimed screenwriter Billy Ray (State of Play, Breach and Shattered Glass) has drafted a script for the movie version that has proved a hit with executives at Fox. It is believed the story will bring Bauer to Europe, according to Variety.

Sutherland, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, is also said to be keen on the script and would love to see the adventures of Bauer continued into a film franchise.

However, there is a note of caution as Fox insiders have warned that the film version remains in the early stages of development and could yet be scuppered by how the TV series fares during its current run.

Fox has yet to sign a deal for a ninth season of 24 and remains tight-lipped on whether it will order another season after Day 8, which is currently airing in the US and UK. It is believed that this season could be the final one.

However, bringing the series to an end could pave the way for a movie, while a past television movie of 24 called Redemption proved that it can still work in a condensed format. Screened prior to the show’s seventh season in 2008, Redemption was nominated for five Emmys.

Fingers crossed at this stage, then…
