37th London Critics' Circle Film Awards: La La Land takes top prize

DAMIEN Chazelle’s La La Land has been crowned film of the year at the 37th London Critics’ Circle Film Awards.
However, the Oscar-tipped musical only picked up the one accolade as the awards were spread around.
Casey Affleck was named actor of the year for his performance in Manchester By The Sea, while Isabelle Huppert took actress of the year for Things To Come. The French actress picked up a further prize: The Dilys Powell Award For Excellence in Film.
The London Critics’ Circle also include categories for British films among their awards. Hence, Ken Loach’s benefits drama I, Daniel Blake was named British Film of the Year, while in the acting categories Andrew Garfield took best actor for Silence and Hacksaw Ridge, while Kate Beckinsale won for Love & Friendship.
The supporting actor category was shared between Moonlight‘s Mahershala Ali and Love & Friendship‘s Tom Bennett, while Naomie Harris was crowned best supporting actress for Moonlight.
Laszlo Nemes was a surprise choice as best director for his Holocaust drama Son of Saul, beating several higher profile filmmakers.
The awards were presented in London on Sunday, January 22.
