3D erotic comedy Sex and Zen arousing big interest in Hong Kong

Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy

Story by Jack Foley

AN EROTIC comedy in 3D has aroused massive box office business in Hong Kong, where people are flocking to see it from as far afield as China.

Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy took (£219,000) (or HK$2.78m) on its first day of release last week, even beating the first-day record set by James Cameron’s Avatar (which earned £207,00).

It has since taken £1.34 million (or HK$17m) in the five days since its release.

The film is a remake of a 1991 Hong Kong movie of the same name, which follows the fortunes of a sexually frustrated scholar in ancient China who loses himself in a harem.

It features Japanese porn stars Hara Saori and Suo Yukiko and Hong Kong actress Vonnie Liu.

According to the BBC, takings have been bolstered by an influx of viewers from mainland China where it is not allowed to be screened because of a ban on erotic content in its cinemas by authorities.

A similar situation occurred in 2007, when many crossed over the border to see the uncut version of Taiwanese director Ang Lee’s sexually explicit 2007 thriller Lust, Caution
