AFI include A Star Is Born and Black Panther among tops 10 films of 2018

A Star Is Born

Story by Jack Foley

BRADLEY Cooper’s directorial debut A Star Is Born and Disney and Marvel’s Black Panther have both been included in the American Film Institute (AFI)’s top 10 films of 2018.

The inclusions are notable for featuring two audience friendly titles, which could bode well for their prospects throughout the forthcoming awards season.

And they came at the expense of other awards hopefuls, most notably Ryan Gosling’s First Man and Steve McQueen’s Widows.

Other films to be included were Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns, which is fast emerging as a major awards contender ahead of its release, and Paul Schrader’s religious drama First Reformed, which stars Ethan Hawke as a priest facing a crisis of faith.

Spike Lee’s BlacKKKlansman is also on the list, as is indie horror hit A Quiet Place.

Because it falls outside the group’s criteria, the AFI decided to recognize Alfonso Cuaron’s Mexican-made Roma with a special award, as the film is only getting a limited cinematic release from streaming giant Netflix.

The full list of 10 films is as follows…

Black Panther
Eighth Grade
If Beale Street Could Talk
The Favourite
First Reformed
Green Book
Mary Poppins Returns
A Quiet Place
A Star Is Born

On the television side, this year’s AFI Awards will go to…

The Americans
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Better Call Saul
The Kominsky Method
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
This Is Us

Selected by two juries, the honourees will be recognized at the AFI Awards luncheon on January 4, 2019.
