AFI name Bridesmaids and Tree of Life among best films of 2011

Story by Jack Foley

THE American Film Institute (AFI) has included comedy hit Bridesmaids and Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life among its annual list of the 10 best US releases of 2011.

The influential group, which last year predicted nine of the 10 eventual Best Picture nominees, also had awards favourites The Descendants, Hugo and War Horse among the list.

Notable by their absences, meanwhile, were other potential awards contenders such as Beginners (which is widely expected to land Christopher Plummer an Oscar), Drive and The Ides of March.

Hary Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2 was also ommitted but only because the AFI committee opted to give the entire franchise a special award instead.

The list of AFI best films is:

The Descendants
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
The Help
J. Edgar
Midnight in Paris
The Tree of Life
War Horse
