AL Pacino is set to play legendary French artist Henri Matisse in new movie Masterpiece.

Based on the true story of Matisse’s relationship with his nurse Monique Bourgeois, who also served as the painter’s model and muse, the film is to be directed by Deepa Mehta (of Water fame).

According to Variety, the project is currently in development and has no start date, although casting for the two female leads is soon to begin.

Pacino recently won a Golden Globe for his performance as Jack Kevorkian in HBO’s You Don’t Know Jack and will next be seen on the big screen opposite Channing Tatum in Dito Montiel’s cop drama The Son of No One.

He’s also due to play controversial record producer Phil Spector in an untitled HBO movie from writer-director David Mamet.
