ALAN Taylor looks set to direct the big screen prequel to classic TV series The Sopranos.

The filmmaker, whose cinematic credits include Thor: The Dark World and Terminator Genisys, is a veteran of the original TV series, even winning an Emmy for his work on the HBO series in 2007.

The prequel has been named The Many Saints of Newark and was written by original series creator David Chase and Sopranos writer Lawrence Konner.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story will be set in the era of the Newark riots in the 1960s, when African-Americans and Italians in New Jersey were at each other’s throats. What started out as threatening behaviour eventually turned lethal.

Further plot details are being kept hush-hush but it is expected that some fan-favourite Sopranos characters will appear in the film.

Aside from his work on The Sopranos and on the big screen, Taylor is a prolific TV director, having also worked on landmark series such as Sex & The City, Deadwood and Game of Thrones, including last season’s episode Beyond The Wall.
