EMERGING star Alden Ehrenreich has been cast as the young Han Solo in a forthcoming Star Wars spin-off.

According to Deadline, the 26-year-old actor will play the legendary character in a new film based on his early life.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, co-directors of The LEGO Movie and 22 Jump Street, will be taking charge of the film, which is expected to be titled Han Solo: A Star Wars Story.

News of Ehrenreich’s casting was followed by a Tweet from Miller that featured a photo of Solo’s iconic blaster and the accompanying caption: “Can’t wait to get shooting!”

As yet, plot details for the film are being kept firmly under wraps.

Ehrenreich may not yet be a household name but he shot to prominence earlier this year as a vowel-mangling western star in the Coen brothers’s Hail, Caesar!

He reportedly beat a host of other big name contenders, including Taron Egerton and Jack Reynor, to the coveted role.

The Han Solo movie will be the second Disney-backed Star Wars spin-off to hit cinemas, following Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is due to debut on December 16.

Lord and Miller’s film is currently set for release on May 25, 2018.

Ford, 73, has played Solo in the original trilogy that hit cinemas between 1977 and 1983 and recent JJ Abrams blockbuster, The Force Awakens.
