Alice in Wonderland breaks UK 3D record

Alice in Wonderland

Story by Jack Foley

TIM Burton’s Alice in Wonderland has set yet another record – this time in the UK and Ireland.

The film, starring Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska, has shot to the top of the box office and posted record opening takings for a 3D movie.

According to figures, the film took £8.3 million over the weekend, easily beating the £6.7 million taken by Avatar during its first weekend.

In total, Alice in Wonderland took £10.5 million, including 2D takings, comfortably beating Avatar into second place with takings of £908,049.

Horror-thriller The Crazies held on to third spot, raking in £673,551, while Peter Jackson’s adaptation of The Lovely Bones, based on Alice Sebold’s hit novel, dropped two places to number four.

Another Disney film, The Princess & The Frog, fell from number five to four.

Burton’s new version of Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s tale is not a remake, but a sequel – blending together strands from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.
