Alice in Wonderland sets US box office record
Story by Jack Foley
TIM Burton’s Alice in Wonderland has set a new record for the all-time highest debut for a non-sequel film at the US box office.
The film, starring Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as Alice, took an estimated $116.3 million in its first three days to set the new box office landmark.
It also topped the world-wide box office, by earning an estimated $210.3 million in all territories, and thereby displacing James Cameron’s Avatar after 11 weeks.
In the US, Imax locations represented roughly 70% of the film’s total domestic earnings as film-goers flocked to see Burton’s vision unfold in 3D.
Elsewhere at the US box office, gritty police drama Brooklyn’s Finest, starring Richard Gere and directed by Antoine Fuqua, exceeded expectations by taking an estimated $13.5 million and landing second spot.
The remainder of the US top five was rounded out by Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, the Bruce Willis-Tracy Jordan action comedy Cop Out and Avatar.
