Andy Serkis to return for Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel

ANDY Serkis has reportedly signed up to reprise his performance capture role of rebellious ape Caesar in the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

According to Total Film magazine, the actor – who has been Oscar tipped for his work on the movie – will join director Rupert Wyatt on the second movie, after Wyatt agreed to take up the option of returning (under the terms of his original contract).

Screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are also already onboard.

As yet, there is no word on whether James Franco or Freida Pinto will feature in the next instalment in the series.

Speaking while promoting the original movie, Serkis said he would be keen to follow Caesar’s journey through another film, saying that he had already spoken to Wyatt about the possibilities they would both like to explore.

“I think this film leaves it in a really fantastic place and it’s ripe for exploration – the beginning of the apes organising society I think would be a really incredible movie,” he said. Read more

Rise of the Planet of the Apes proved such a massive success earlier this year – both critically and commercially – that a sequel has long seemed inevitable.
