Angela Lansbury joins Mary Poppins Returns

Story by Jack Foley

ANGELA Lansbury has joined the cast of Mary Poppins Returns as the Balloon Lady, a beloved character from PL Travers’ original books.

The casting news was initially announced, inadvertently, by Dick Van Dyke, who revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she would be making an appearance. He said: “It’s a great cast – Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury and that guy [Lin-Manuel Miranda] from Hamilton.”

But the revelation prompted Disney to confirm the news.

The Balloon Lady appears in Travers’ novel Mary Poppins Comes Back. She is expected to make her appearance while getting up to mischief in the park during one of Mary Poppins’ days out with Jane and Michael Banks.

Set around 20 years after the 1964 original, when the kids are all grown up, Mary Poppins Returns will see the magical nanny (played by Emily Blunt) returning to comfort the Banks children after another tragedy.

Also on board is Meryl Streep, who will likely play Mary’s cousin Topsy, as well as Lin Manuel Miranda – creator of hit musical Hamilton – who will play street lamp lighter Jack. Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters and Colin Firth also have roles, while the three new Banks children will be played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and Joel Dawson.

Mary Poppins Returns will be released on December 25, 2018.
