Angelina Jolie lands Disney's Maleficent

Story by Jack Foley

ANGELINA Jolie is to make Disney’s Maleficent her next movie – and her first starring role in two years.

Speaking at the Berlin Film Festival where she screened her directorial debut In The Land of Blood and Honey, the actress told a crowded press conference: “I haven’t acted in two years, and I haven’t done anything else since this [Land of Blood and Honey]. The next thing I am looking at is a Disney movie.”

Maleficent has recently gained Robert Stromberg – the production designer on Avatar and Alice in Wonderland – as director and would potentially find Jolie taking on the role of the sorceress from the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale.

Jolie has has long been keen on the project, having told The Hollywood Reporter on a previous occasion that her children want her to make the movie and even call her “mom-elicent”.

She also says she is keen to make a live-action family film after her experience voicing the Kung Fu Panda franchise.

Elaborating on these two points in Berlin, Jolie said: “The best thing to find that balance is to do something that is just for children. You know, you find different ways to make things matter. When, for example, you do fun action movies, they are empowering for my daughters.”

Shooting on Maleficent is expected to start later this year with a view to having it ready for a cinema release in 2015.

It would seem to rule out her involvement in the previously announced new Luc Besson movie.
