Anne Hathaway in Love & Other Drugs

Story by Jack Foley

ANNE Hathaway has landed the higely coveted female lead in Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises.

The announcement, made by Warner Bros on Wednesday morning (January 19, 2011) also confirmed that she will play Catwoman – aka Selena Kyle – alongside Christian Bale’s caped crusader.

The studio also revealed that Tom Hardy, who joined the cast last autumn, will play the character Bane.

In a statement, Nolan commented: “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”

Hathaway was on a long list of actresses who tested for the role in the eagerly anticipated three-quel, along with Jessica Biel and Keira Knightley.

According to the Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision, her test involved Christian Bale, who had to leave his National Board of Review in New York dinner early so he could catch a flight back to LA to conduct.

Hathaway’s star has been on the rise ever since she landed an Oscar nomination for her role in indie drama Rachel Getting Married. Since then, she has established herself as a major box office force with prominent roles in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and – most recently – Ed Zwick’s Love & Other Drugs alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.

She will also shortly be seen alongside Jim Sturgess in the eagerly anticipated big screen adaptation of best-selling novel One Day.
