ANTONIO Banderas is to play Pablo Picasso in a new biopic, according to Variety.

The film, titled 33 Dias (33 Days), will reportedly follow the artist’s life during the 33 days he spent painting his famous mural Guernica. It will be directed by Carlos Saura, who co-scripted the screenplay with Elias Querejeta and French writer Louis-Charles Sirjacq.

Shooting is due to commence next summer on location in Paris and Guernica.

Commenting on the role, Banderas told Spanish newspaper El Pais: “Picasso is a character that has pursued me for a long time and I always rejected. He deserves a lot of respect because I am from Malaga, and I was born four blocks from where he was born.”

Variety adds that the film will not only focus on Picasso’s creative process but also his complicated love affair with French artist Dora Maar.
