ARMIE Hammer has won the role of The Lone Ranger alongside Johnny Depp’s Tonto.

The 24-year-old actor shot to prominence last year as the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network

He will play the masked hero in Disney’s adaptation of The Lone Ranger, according to representatives for the actor.

Depp has already been cast as the title character’s Native American companion Tonto, while Gore Verbinski, who directed Depp in Rango and the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, will step behind the camera.

Super producer Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the project, which Disney is eyeing for a release sometime next year.

According to various US reports, Depp’s Tonto will be more than just the Lone Ranger’s sidekick, thereby reinventing the relationship.

Hammer will next be seen in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar as Clyde Tolson alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.
