Arthur Christmas returns to top of UK box office for Christmas

Arthur Christmas

Story by Jack Foley

ANIMATED favourite Arthur Christmas has returned to the top of the UK and Ireland box office chart in its seventh week of release.

The Aardman produced comedy, featuring the voices of James McAvoy and Bill Nighy, took £2.05m to overtake last week’s two films, Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows and Alvin And The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.

Its UK box office total now stands at £19.7 million.

However, in spite of Arthur Christmas‘s success, takings were generally down for the weekend as cinemas were closed on Christmas Day meaning that only two days of box office receipts were recorded.

The remainder of the UK top five was occupied by Shrek prequel Puss In Boots and ensemble romantic comedy New Year’s Eve (at five).

The only new entry in the chart was Indian action sequel Don 2, starring Shah Rukh Khan, at six.

Box office tills were due to be boosted by the Boxing Day releases Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – which has become a global hit and Tom Cruise’s biggest success in years – and the remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
