JAMES Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar has been named best film at the Jameson Empire Awards in London.

The filmmaker also took best director at the awards ceremony, as voted for by readers of Empire magazine, while one of the film’s stars, Zoe Saldana, was recognised for her performance-captured turn as Neytiri.

Of the night’s other big prizes, Inglourious Basterds star Christoph Waltz was crowned best actor for his multi-lingual portrayal of Col. Hans Landa, while Aaron Johnson was named best newcomer for his performance in John Lennon movie Nowhere Boy.

Star Trek took best sci-fi movie, Swedish vampire drama Let The Right One In was named best horror and British satire In The Loop deservedly took best comedy.
