Avatar beats Mamma Mia's UK box office record

Story by Jack Foley
JAMES Cameron’s Avatar has now become the highest-grossing film in the UK, surpassing previous record holder Mamma Mia!.
The Oscar nominated sci-fi epic, and all time global record holder, has now taken $116.5 million in the UK, slipping past Mamma Mia‘s total (£69.17m) on its way to another world-dominating week of ticket sales.
The film has also became the top grosser in Brazil and Taiwan and is the most popular film in Italy, where it has taken a record-breaking total of $69.6 million so far.
To underline Avatar‘s UK popularity, Mamma Mia! had taken 79% of its eventual total gross after eight weekends on release.
If Avatar follows the same pattern, it can expect to take £91m as a UK total.
If, however, it emulates Titanic‘s Oscar-winning success at the forthcoming awards ceremony, distributor Twentieth Century Fox can realistically expect to see the film surpass the £100 million mark.
