THE third Avengers movie will be split into two parts and released in May 2018 and 2019, respectively.

Speaking at an event for press and fans at El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, Marvel president Kevin Feige said that the first film will be called Avengers: Infinity War and will be released on May 4, 2018.

Its as yet untitled follow-up will follow a year later.

The announcement formed part of a whole rosta of new releases from Marvel, which extends to a third Captain America film and first outings for Black Panther and Doctor Strange.

The former saw Chadwick Boseman unveiled as Marvel’s first black stand-alone lead actor. He will play T’Challa, the head of the fictional African nation of Wakanda, one of the Avengers. His film will be released in November 2017.

Doctor Strange, meanwhile, will be released on November 6, 2016 – although Feige refused to confirm yesterday’s media reports that “Benedict Cumberbatch”: had been cast in the lead role, stating cryptically: “If it was confirmed, we would have announced it today.”

However, he could confirm that the third Captain America film will be called Civil War, fuelling speculation that the story will be an adaptation of the Civil War comics storyline, which pits Iron Man and Captain America against one another.

He also said that the next Thor release will be called Thor: Ragnarok, which, he said, “means essentially the end of all things”. Tom Hiddleston will return in the film as Loki.

Marvel also unveiled artwork from the Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange and The Inhumans.

The release dates are as follows…

Captain America 3: Civil War – May, 6, 2016
Doctor Strange – November 6, 2016
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – May 5, 2017
Thor: Ragnarok – July 28, 2018
Black Panther – November 3, 2017
The Avengers 3 – Infinity War: Part 1 – May 4, 2018
Captain Marvel – July 6, 2018
Inhumans – November 2, 2018
The Avengers 3 – Infinity War: Part 2 – 2019
