Avengers: Infinity War villains to include Thanos and the Black Order

Captain America: Civil War

IT LOOKS like Marvel’s Avengers are going to have their hands full when Infinity War lands in cinemas.

As well as the previously announced Thanos as the movie’s main villain, it has now been revealed that the superheroes will also be battling the Black Order.

The revelation was made at Disney’s D23 Expo on Saturday, when four statuettes were unveiled as part of the Infinity War panel.

No casting news has been announced but the news is likely to send comic book fans into frenzied excitement.

In comic book form, the Black Order (of Cull Obsidian) first appeared in 2013’s New Avengers Vol. 3 No. 8, having been created by writer Jonathan Hickman and artists Jerome Opena and Jim Cheung for the Infinity storyline.

Its purpose was simple: to retrieve the Infinity Gems – or Infinity Stones – at whatever cost.

Among their order were the characters Corvus Glaive — Thanos’ right-hand man, as well as Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, Black Dwarf and Supergiant.

In terms of power, each member poses a significant threat, with the structure of the Infinity storyline designed to give each individual member of the Black Order enough strength to match an entire team of superheroes.

It would mean that that any cinematic version, if faithfully translated to screen, would really complicate things for Marvel’s Avengers.

In addition to making the new villain reveal, Disney showed a new trailer to fans at D23 (which has not yet been made available online).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the trailer begins with the Guardians of the Galaxy on their ship, floating in space, and coming across the unconscious Thor (Hemsworth), wearing his gladiator garb from Thor: Ragnarok. They subsequently bring him inside the ship, where Mantis (Klementieff) wakes him up.

Thereafter, the action heads to Earth, where the Avengers are dealing with death and destruction on many fronts. Firstly, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) has the Tesseract and is up to his usual no good, while over in New York, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) has his spider senses awakened.

There was also footage of Captain America sporting a beard and looking as though he’s been through a lot, Thanos pulling down part of a moon to battle the Avengers, and Doctor Strange battling alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy and Iron Man on this planet. Excited yet?

Avengers: Infinity War, which will be released on May 4, 2018, is being billed as the capstone of a decade’s worth of storytelling for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
