Avengers sequel already in the works

Marvel Avengers Assemble

Story by Jack Foley

A SEQUEL to Marvel Avengers Assemble is already in the works, according to Disney head honcho Robert Iger.

What’s more, it will come hot on the heels of previously-announced sequels to Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, which are already in various stages of development.

The confirmation was made by Iger during a conference call with analysts to discuss Disney’s quarterly earnings, according to The Hollywood Reporter, during which he also revealed that Avengers had “shattered” US box office records with a $207.1 million opening weekend that helped to put its global performance thus far at $702 million.

He added that there were also plans in the works for Avengers-based attractions in some of Disney’s theme parks.

As yet, no release date has been set for a sequel and it is not known whether Joss Whedon will return as director.

But nothing will probably happen until 2015 at the earliest given that Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are both scheduled for 2013, while a sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger is in the works for 2014.
