Benicio Del Toro all but confirms Star Wars: Episode VIII role

Sicario

Story by Jack Foley

BENICIO Del Toro has all but confirmed that he will appear in Star Wars: Episode VIII.

The Rian Johnson directed film will follow Star Wars: The Force Awakens but plot details are being kept firmly under wraps, along with any casting plans.

But speaking to Entertainment Tonight during a red carpet appearance, the star of The Usual Suspects and Traffic, said that he thought it “was going to happen”.

“I can’t tell you much about it but I think that it might happen,” he said. “So, I’m very excited.”

He added: “I can’t talk too much about it. The script is hard to get. They told me they’ll cut my finger if I talk about it.”

Del Toro did, however, discuss his past love for the original Star Wars trilogy, saying: “I saw the original one when it came out and it marked me,” he said. “I was impressed by the film and by the characters and with the story and the message.”

The smart money is now on Del Toro having been cast as the villain. And if the report turns out to be true, this will mark Del Toro’s second big blockbuster outing following his appearance in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy last summer.

He’s back in serious mode this autumn, however, with roles in Escobar and the forthcoming drug drama Sicario, in which he once again excels.
