Benicio del Toro set to play Pablo Escobar
Story by Jack Foley
BENICIO del Toro looks set to play notorious Colombian cocaine trafficker Pablo Escobar in a new film.
According to Variety, Paradise Lost would also mark the directorial debut of Italian actor-turned-filmmaker Andrea di Stefano, who also penned the script.
Inspired by true events, the film would focus on a character named Nick, a young surfer who visits his brother in Colombia and falls madly in love with a beautiful local girl called Maria, whose uncle turns out to be Escobar.
Producer Dimitri Rassam told Variety that Del Toro is “one of the rare actors with enough charisma and range to play such a multi-faceted character as Escobar, who could be wonderfully charming yet dangerous and menacing”.
However, he maintained the film was not an Escobar biopic, but rather a film that will have “a narrative structure in the vein of The Last King of Scotland, weaving Nick and Maria’s romance with Nick’s ambivalent and destructive relationship with Escobar”.
The 11-week shoot is currently scheduled to take place in Panama in March 2013.
